“Trump Urges Apple to Follow Google’s ‘Lake America’ Label Trend”

Google Maps has introduced “Lake America” labels, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to urge Apple to do the same with its iPhone navigation app. This situation emphasizes the dominance of American tech companies in Canada, leaving consumers and businesses with limited non-U.S. alternatives.

According to Anne Pasek, a Canada Research Chair at Trent University, Canadians are heavily reliant on American tech giants, subjecting their digital activities to U.S. regulations. Recently, Canadian websites, including government and banking sites, displayed maps with Lake Ontario renamed as Lake America following an executive order by Trump.

Google implemented the change for U.S. users and offered a localization option for non-American websites to display the original name. The company clarified that the adjustment aligns with their policy for differing water body names across countries.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum revealed that Trump urged Apple to adopt the Lake America label, but Apple has not commented on the matter. These tech platforms not only provide navigation but also support various Canadian businesses with essential information and services.

Emily Osborne from the Canadian Shield Institute highlighted the dependence on American tech companies for digital services. She mentioned Dutch companies TomTom and HERE Technologies as potential alternatives. Concerns arise regarding possible tech-related pressure points in Canada amid escalating tensions with the U.S.

Osborne cited the vulnerability of Canadian businesses relying on U.S.-owned digital infrastructure, particularly during instances like the AWS outage. She emphasized the need for Canadian alternatives in critical areas like payment processing and cloud storage to mitigate risks associated with foreign dependencies.
