“Power Outage at Western University Disrupts Research”

A power outage lasting four days at Western University in London, Ontario has resulted in the loss of valuable research samples, disruptions to experiments, and concerns among biology students and faculty about safeguarding millions of dollars of scientific research. The outage, which began due to a disruption at a campus power substation, has affected several key buildings on campus, including the Biological & Geological Sciences Building, Materials Sciences Addition, Chemistry Building, and Natural Sciences Centre. While power has been restored to most buildings, the four affected buildings continue to rely on backup power as repairs are ongoing.

This incident marks the fifth major power outage impacting biology research facilities since August 2025, prompting worries among students and faculty members. Beth MacDougall-Shackleton, a biology professor, expressed concerns about the university’s reliability in providing stable power for research activities. She highlighted the detrimental impact on research conditions, such as overheating growth chambers, thawing research samples in freezers, and the inability to access animals for studies.

According to Matheus Sanita Lima, a fifth-year PhD candidate in biology, the outage has resulted in the loss of irreplaceable samples, including specimens from extinct species, collections dating back to the 1970s, and materials from long-term studies. These losses have significant implications for graduate students, potentially leading to extended research timelines.

Amidst these challenges, students and faculty members are calling for action from Western University’s administration. They seek improved communication during outages, upgrades to the campus electrical system, and increased maintenance staffing to prevent future disruptions. Concerns have also been raised about the university’s reputation with research partners and potential funding losses if regulatory standards are not met.

The ongoing outages have raised questions about Western’s commitment to supporting research activities and the overall impact on scientific endeavors at the university. Researchers have faced difficulties in accessing animal facilities and ensuring proper conditions for their work, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions to prevent further disruptions.
