“UK Faces Internet Woes Amid Heatwave Threat”

Following a recent period of hot weather, the UK is bracing for another round of intense heat, with temperatures forecasted to exceed 37°C on Wednesday, potentially setting a new record. While the sunny conditions are ideal for outdoor activities like beach outings, barbecues, and picnics, the extreme heat may pose challenges for an essential aspect of modern living — your internet connection. Surprisingly, high temperatures can disrupt your broadband service.

But why does hot weather impact internet speeds, and what measures can you take to prevent your Wi-Fi from struggling?

The issue typically originates with the router, the small device responsible for keeping your household online. Similar to smartphones and laptops, routers can experience performance issues when exposed to excessive heat, leading to slowdowns or even shutdowns.

If you’ve ever left a phone in direct sunlight, you’re likely familiar with the warnings that pop up when the device overheats. Routers can face similar challenges.

Virgin Media, a major UK internet provider, highlighted the risks, stating, “While our Hubs undergo rigorous temperature testing, it’s best to keep them away from direct sunlight, just like your other devices.”

“A warm room alone is unlikely to cause issues, as modern routers are designed to handle typical summer temperatures. However, placing your router in direct sunlight can push it beyond its operational limits. Think of it as protecting your skin from sunburn by seeking shade,” the company explained.

When a router overheats, it can lead to decreased broadband speeds and potential temporary shutdowns until it cools down. Placing the router away from sunlight is a good initial step, but proper placement is crucial for optimal performance. While hiding the router in a cupboard may seem neat, poor ventilation can hinder Wi-Fi performance.

Virgin Media advised, “Optimal router placement can improve Wi-Fi coverage. Avoid placing the router in a cupboard or behind your TV.”

For optimal connectivity, position your router in an open area, elevated off the floor, and centrally located within your home. Additionally, keep it away from devices that could cause interference, such as cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens.

Lastly, avoid placing your router near a fish tank, as water can disrupt Wi-Fi signals, affecting connectivity throughout your home.

By implementing these simple adjustments, you can safeguard your broadband connection and ensure smooth internet performance, even during periods of extreme heat.
