“Stabbing at Edmonton Gurdwara Temple: 2 Injured, Suspect in Custody”

Police reported that two individuals sustained injuries at the Nanaksar Gurdwara temple in Edmonton following an interruption during morning prayers by a man wielding a screwdriver. Authorities have taken a 27-year-old suspect into custody in connection with the stabbing incident that occurred on the city’s northeast side around 5 a.m.

The motives behind the stabbing remain undisclosed by law enforcement, but Acting Inspector Eric Stewart from the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) mentioned during a press briefing that the EPS Hate Crimes unit is actively investigating the case. The police were alerted to the situation after receiving a report of a man behaving erratically in traffic, leading to their swift response to the temple.

According to Stewart, the suspect entered the temple premises and tried to gain access to the prayer room, resulting in the stabbing of two individuals. Fortunately, quick-thinking witnesses intervened and apprehended the perpetrator before the authorities arrived. The victims, aged 75 and 51, were promptly transported to a medical facility for treatment of their non-life-threatening injuries, while the suspect also received medical attention for his injuries.

The suspect, who has a history of violence and is known to law enforcement, faces pending charges. Investigations revealed that the individual had been recently released from a federal facility where he was serving a sentence for aggravated assault and assaulting a peace officer. The suspect had failed to report to the designated halfway house in Edmonton after his release.

In the aftermath of the incident, Zora Grewal, the vice president of the Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple, shared that witnesses recounted the attack disrupting morning prayers at the temple, where the victims, described by the police as worshippers, were identified as a temple priest and a dedicated volunteer. Despite initial concerns that a Sikh scripture might have been targeted during the assault, temple representatives clarified that no sacred texts were harmed during the incident.

Expressing shock over the perpetrator’s recent release from custody, Grewal emphasized the need for enhanced oversight on the release of potentially dangerous offenders to safeguard public safety. Both victims are expected to recover from their injuries, with discussions underway to assess additional security measures for the temple.

The Sikh community has been urged to remain vigilant following the unsettling incident, with calls for enhanced security measures at gurdwaras across Canada amidst a reported increase in anti-Sikh hate incidents. The Nanaksar Gurdwara temple was temporarily closed to the public as investigations continue, coinciding with recent threatening phone calls received by two Sikh temples in Alberta.

Political figures, including Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney, condemned the act of violence and extended their support to the affected community. Naheed Nenshi, Alberta’s official opposition leader, expressed dismay over the violence within the temple, emphasizing the importance of a thorough investigation to determine if the incident constitutes a hate crime. Authorities are diligently working to ensure the safety and well-being of all community members during this challenging time.
