“Sainsbury’s consolidates Chop Chop app into main platform”

Sainsbury’s has decided to discontinue its Chop Chop rapid delivery app, with plans to merge its features into the main Sainsbury’s app for a more streamlined shopping experience.

Launched in 2016, Chop Chop aimed to deliver groceries within 60 minutes or less for a premium fee and was operational in 50 Sainsbury’s stores. Users who frequently utilized the service may have noticed that the standalone Chop Chop app has been removed, redirecting download attempts to the primary Sainsbury’s app.

Jim Banks, Sainsbury’s head of experience design, explained the move as a means to simplify the shopping process for customers. He expressed this in a LinkedIn post, stating, “Chop Chop is dead. Long live Chop Chop! We’ve officially decommissioned the standalone Chop Chop app and brought it into the Sainsbury’s shopping app. Why? Well, because customers shouldn’t have to think about which app to use.”

He commended the collaborative effort of various teams in bringing about this change, emphasizing the goal of enhancing the shopping experience by consolidating services into one platform.

Chop Chop previously competed with Tesco’s Whoosh rapid delivery service, known for delivering food to customers in as little as 20 minutes. In other UK supermarket news, Co-op has announced plans to open 18 new or upgraded stores in the initial quarter of 2026.

The first new Co-op store of the year will be located in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire. Additionally, several stores, including the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated site in Ealing, London, are set to reopen with enhanced offerings.

Kate McCrae, Co-op’s Operations Director, highlighted the brand’s commitment to creating local stores that serve as community hubs and cater to the diverse needs of residents. She emphasized the focus on quality products, value, and promotions to benefit both members and customers.

Furthermore, Co-op has unveiled plans to introduce thousands of new apprenticeships in the coming years. A £70 million investment through the Levy Share service aims to create 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030, underlining the company’s dedication to fostering talent and supporting growth opportunities.
