Supermarket chain Lidl is set to enter the mobile phone market with budget-friendly plans, requiring customers to have a Lidl Plus account to access the deals. This move is part of a significant £600 million investment by the company, which also includes the opening of 50 new stores nationwide.
Following the lead of other non-traditional competitors in the telecom industry like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl already offers similar services in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The Financial Times suggests potential future expansions into the UK, US, France, and Spain.
Lidl’s owner, Schwarz Group, has partnered with 1GLOBAL communications provider to operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), leveraging existing infrastructure to offer mobile plans without building its own network. In addition to its digital ventures, Lidl plans to open over 50 new stores in the next year, creating 2,000 jobs and investing in regional growth.
The expansion aligns with Lidl’s commitment to supporting British communities by providing affordable, healthy food and creating employment opportunities. Schwarz Group’s 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL signifies a broader digital strategy, which includes investments in cloud computing, cybersecurity, and AI startups. Analysts predict that Lidl’s entry into new markets could pose challenges to established telecom providers due to competitive pricing and convenience.
The employment minister praised Lidl’s investment for creating jobs that pay fair wages and enhance community standards of living. This strategic move by Lidl reflects its vision for growth and innovation in the evolving digital landscape.
