A depraved murderer has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for killing his estranged spouse and desecrating her body.
Zarbab Ali, 29, will spend the remainder of his days behind bars following the brutal death of Rachael Castillo, 25, with whom he shared two children. Castillo had initiated divorce proceedings, which were nearing completion when Ali viciously attacked her while she was alone at her sister’s apartment, where she and her children had sought refuge.
Ali, aware that Castillo was alone, entered the apartment, turned off the lights, and ambushed her in a dim hallway, stabbing her multiple times in the neck and chest. After the heinous act, he wrapped her body in a blanket, attempted to clean the scene, and then placed her in the trunk of his car, which he had purposely left open. He then transported the body to Littlerock, California, where he buried her in a shallow grave using a newly purchased shovel.
Following the discovery of signs of a violent struggle in the apartment, authorities were alerted. Despite Castillo’s disappearance, her personal belongings were still present at the residence. Law enforcement officers found bloody items in a nearby dumpster and gathered witness statements indicating Ali’s presence at the scene.
In a disturbing turn of events, Ali returned to the burial site under the cover of darkness, unearthed Castillo’s body, sexually assaulted her remains, and reburied her. Subsequently, he was arrested and admitted to his abhorrent actions during a police interrogation.
Rachel’s remains were recovered in a remote desert location near Littlerock, leading to Ali’s arrest. He pleaded guilty to various charges, including murder and desecration of human remains. During the sentencing phase, the court heard poignant victim impact statements highlighting Castillo’s positive attributes as a loving mother, sister, daughter, and friend with aspirations for her future and that of her children.
Addressing Ali directly, speakers condemned his cowardly actions and emphasized the lasting impact on the innocent children left behind.
