Upon witnessing a pygmy raccoon creating a toy ball from discarded items, biologist Nessie O’Neil of Miami University in Ohio had an unexpected scientific breakthrough.
O’Neil, recalling the moment to As It Happens host Nil Köksal, initially found the raccoon’s behavior adorable.
However, upon sharing the video with her advisor, O’Neil was advised not to post it on social media as it held significant scientific value for a future academic paper.
That paper, now published in the Wild journal, unveils the unique behavior of Mexican pygmy raccoons scavenging for materials to craft play objects, demonstrating a form of “material culture” within the Procyonidae family.
This discovery marks the first documented instance of socially shared cultural information related to objects among raccoons and similar species like ringtails.
O’Neil emphasized the playful nature of raccoons and their affinity for cat toys, highlighting the novelty of observing such toy-making behaviors.

The critically endangered pygmy raccoons reside solely on Cozumel Island, off the Yucatan Peninsula, weighing between three to four kilograms and exhibiting distinctive foraging behaviors in mangrove forests.
As their natural habitat diminishes due to development, O’Neil remarked on their shift towards scavenging from tourists and garbage bins for survival.
During observations at a beach club, O’Neil witnessed a raccoon crafting a toy from a receipt, using water and sand to mold it into a ball, a behavior mimicked by its sibling.
