A Mexican court has issued arrest warrants for a British man, Harry Robinson, and a Mexican woman, Jacqueline Herrera Herrera, accused of defrauding a Canadian couple of their retirement savings in an alleged condo-flip scheme. The warrants were issued in late July by a Quintana Roo state court judge. Robinson and Herrera are currently seeking to challenge these warrants in a Mexican federal court, but this process will not affect the ongoing criminal case against them at the state level.
The pair is facing accusations from the state prosecutor’s office of committing fraud through deception. The victims, Cindy Thompson and Glenn Brown from Curve Lake, Ontario, sent $280,000 to a company co-owned by Robinson and Herrera, who promised lucrative returns on a condo investment in Playa del Carmen that never materialized.
Thompson and Brown lodged a criminal complaint against Robinson and Herrera earlier this year. The case originated in late 2024 when Thompson, exploring real estate opportunities in Mexico, discovered XMEX Investments operated by Robinson. She transferred $170,000 in two installments for a one-bedroom condo but did not receive the property. Subsequently, Robinson persuaded Thompson to invest an additional $110,000, along with funds from Brown, in a deal to flip seven condos with promises of substantial profits. However, their money disappeared without a trace.
A federal court judge has temporarily halted the arrest warrant against Herrera, with ongoing efforts to dismiss it, while a hearing for Robinson’s application is scheduled for September 8 in Cancun. There are conflicting accusations between Herrera and Robinson regarding the missing funds, with Herrera offering a settlement to Thompson through a different lawyer, which Thompson declined.
Thompson expressed frustration with navigating the complexities of the Mexican legal system and the uncertainties surrounding the case. Despite the challenges, she remains cautiously optimistic about the outcome while acknowledging the anxiety and distance from the legal proceedings.
