“Southgate’s Dream: Scenic Train Tours in Sask. Valley”

Gary Southgate’s long-held dream of offering scenic train tours through the picturesque landscapes of southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley has finally become a reality. The first public ride for Eastend Scenic Rail Tours, initiated by the farmer from North Battleford, Sask., took place last month, marking a significant milestone in his passion project.

Southgate’s fascination with trains dates back to his childhood, when he would watch steam locomotives pass by. His journey into collecting vintage trains began in 2013, driven by a desire to bring these historic vehicles back into service. Over the years, he has amassed a substantial collection of rail cars, including those featured in movies like the Polar Express and once used by notable figures like Eleanor Roosevelt.

Despite facing challenges, such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on operations and the logistical hurdles of managing the tour while running a farm hundreds of kilometers away, Southgate remains dedicated to his vision. He envisions transforming Eastend into a hub for railway enthusiasts, with plans for an RV park, a museum, and facilities for restoring and maintaining train equipment.

The success of the initial trips has buoyed Southgate’s spirits, and he is optimistic about the future of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours. He hopes that his efforts will not only preserve a piece of history but also inspire others to carry on his legacy, making the venture a unique and enduring attraction for the community and visitors from far and wide.
