“Gruffalo Granny” Becomes Best-Selling Book in UK

Children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently discussed her renowned work “The Gruffalo” in an interview. Initially uncertain about its success due to its dark and rhyming nature, Donaldson was surprised by the book’s popularity. Now, after 26 years, she and illustrator Axel Scheffler have released “Gruffalo Granny,” the latest addition to the series.

“Gruffalo Granny” follows the original Gruffalo and his child preparing for the visit of Gruffalo Granny, known for her enormous appetite. Despite similarities in the creative process, Donaldson emphasized the unique promotional efforts for this book, including a projection at the British Library.

The reception of “Gruffalo Granny” exceeded expectations, becoming the top-selling book in the UK for 2026 within days of its release. Donaldson expressed pride in the enduring appeal of the Gruffalo characters, with adults now sharing the stories with their children and grandchildren.

While Donaldson doesn’t plan to write more Gruffalo books, her next project, “Winnifred Duck,” based on a true story of rubber ducks lost at sea, is set to launch soon. Inspired by the tale, Donaldson continues her successful career as a children’s writer.
