The Canadian women’s basketball team emerged victorious with an 83-53 win against Mexico in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament held in Guadalajara. This triumph brings Canada one step closer to qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Additionally, Canada secured the sole spot in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2028, which is the final qualifying stage for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Leading the charge for Canada was Kayla Alexander, who contributed 14 points along with four rebounds and three assists. Agot Makeer also made an impact with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, three rebounds, and three assists without any turnovers.
The Canadian women’s team dominated the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record, securing wins against Senegal, the Philippines, Mexico, and New Zealand before clinching victory over the host nation in the final match.
Head coach Nell Fortner expressed her pride in the team’s performance, highlighting the successful integration of both young players and seasoned veterans. Syla Swords tallied 12 points, while Yvonne Ejim delivered an impressive 10-point, 17-rebound double-double, along with two assists and a block. Ejim’s outstanding performance earned her a game-high efficiency rating of 22 and a plus-32 rating.
Fortner credited the team’s defensive strategy for stifling Mexico’s offense, emphasizing the focus on limiting their three-point shooting. By holding Mexico to 5-for-26 from beyond the arc, Canada’s defensive prowess paved the way for their offensive success, ultimately leading to a resounding victory.
