Edmonton Marathon Apologizes for Course Length Error

After the conclusion of the Edmonton Marathon, the race director has issued an apology following the discovery of an error in accounting for detours, resulting in the race courses being longer than initially estimated. This acknowledgment validates the suspicions of many participants.

In a statement released on Tuesday, race director Tom Keogh disclosed that the half-marathon and marathon courses were found to be 674.7 meters longer than previously believed. Keogh expressed regret for the oversight, attributing it to miscalculations in adjusting the course due to detours.

Keogh took full responsibility for the error, emphasizing the thorough review conducted by event officials. Despite initial assurances on the course certification process, the mistake in calculating detour-related adjustments led to the courses being inaccurately measured.

Concerns regarding the race distances were raised by elite and amateur runners before the official statement was issued. Some participants, including Calgary runner Mitch Walz, expressed disappointment after realizing they had covered a longer distance than expected during the marathon.

The Edmonton Marathon, a qualifying event for prestigious races like the Boston Marathon, is collaborating with Athletics Canada and other stakeholders to address the impact of the measurement error on this year’s results. Keogh assured participants that efforts are underway to rectify the situation and prevent similar mishaps in the future.

The Boston Athletic Association clarified that adjusted results due to course discrepancies are not typically accepted, but athletes who exceed the required distance while still meeting the qualifying time may be considered for the marathon.

Despite the challenges faced, runners like Walz remain hopeful for future opportunities in elite marathons and commend the efforts of race organizers to address the issue transparently and responsibly.
