Celebrated actor and Parkinson’s disease advocate Michael J. Fox expressed feelings of “pride” and “humility” upon being honored with an elevation to the companion level of the Order of Canada at Rideau Hall. The audience rose to applaud Fox as Governor General Louise Arbour bestowed the prestigious title in recognition of his impactful global advocacy and unwavering openness about Parkinson’s.

Reflecting on the ceremony, Fox shared his deep connection to Canada, its values, and his upbringing that shaped his identity as a proud Canadian. He emphasized his love for Canadian music and culture, underscoring how these elements have defined his perspective and shaped his life at the age of 65.

Parkinson’s, a degenerative nervous system condition characterized by tremors and mobility issues, has been a focal point for Fox since he disclosed his diagnosis in 1998. He has actively fundraised for Parkinson’s research and candidly shared his experiences to shed light on the challenges faced by individuals living with the disease.

Fox highlighted Canada’s pivotal role in advancing Parkinson’s research, particularly in the development of deep brain stimulation. The ceremony marked his promotion alongside 50 other distinguished individuals within the Order of Canada, with Governor General Arbour commending their collective dedication and contributions to society.

Additionally, notable figures like mechanical engineering professor Yusuf Altintas, pediatric neuro-oncology expert Nada Jabado, former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz, sculptor Ruth Elsie Abernethy, investigative journalist Susanne Craig, music director Colin Roswell Clarke, playwright Marcelle Dubois, and submarine expert Patrick Joseph Lahey were among those honored for their remarkable contributions to their respective fields.
