The ocean sunfish, known for its massive size and covered in parasites, is explored in a fascinating episode of “The Nature of Things 101” hosted by Sarika Cullis-Suzuki. Described as an unconventional fish with a circular body, huge fins, and no tail, the Mola mola species is showcased using a life-size model. These fish, among the largest in the sea, travel long distances to find food, diving deep multiple times daily, making them a target for parasites due to their slow movement and large surface area.
Cullis-Suzuki reveals that the Mola mola is infested with parasites in various body parts, including the skin, gills, fins, eyeballs, mouth, and intestine, with scientists identifying 73 different parasite species on them. The fish employs unique methods to rid itself of parasites, such as breaching out of the water and allowing smaller fish and birds to feed on the parasites. Despite the existing knowledge, the ocean sunfish remains a species in need of further research, highlighting the continuous learning opportunities in understanding these peculiar creatures.
