At the Montreal Elite16 tournament, Canadian beach volleyball players Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson clinched the bronze medal on their home turf.
The duo, who won the Olympic silver in 2024, fought back to defeat Germany’s Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann with scores of 20-22, 21-12, and 18-16, securing a podium finish.
Wilkerson led the charge with 32 attack points, 5 block points, and a serve point, while Humana-Paredes contributed 9 attack points.
The match had to be paused due to inclement weather before resuming.
Earlier in the day, the Canadian pair fell short in the semifinals, losing 21-19, 20-22, 15-7 to Brazil’s Thamela Galil and Victoria Tosta.
This defeat ended their chances of achieving a three-peat, but they later secured the bronze medal by outplaying Germany’s Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann.
Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson had previously won the Montreal titles in 2023 and 2025, with their Olympic silver medal win in Paris in between.
Canadian men secure bronze
Sam Schachter and Jonathan Pickett of Canada staged a comeback to claim victory in the men’s bronze-medal match on Sunday.
The duo from Ontario rallied to defeat Norway’s Hendrik Mol and Mathias Berntsen after losing the first set 16-21, ultimately winning the next two sets 28-26 and 15-12 to secure their first podium finish together at home.
Schachter and Pickett caused a major upset by beating the world No. 1s in the men’s semifinals of the FIVB Beach Pro Tour event on Saturday.
Despite their valiant efforts, the 39th-ranked Canadians fell short in the semifinals on Sunday morning, losing 2-1 (21-12, 16-21, 16-14) to Brazil’s Renato Andrew Lima de Carvalho and André Loyola Stein.
