U.S. President Donald Trump made a strong declaration on social media Wednesday, promising to execute what he described as “the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!” Trump stated that this operation would involve Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented level, although he provided limited specifics.
In his message on Truth Social, Trump also cautioned about economic repercussions for any nation that backed Tehran or extended any form of support to Iran. He emphasized that any country permitting its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to aid Iran would face significant Economic Consequences. Trump did not mention any particular steps that Washington would take against such countries nor did he identify any nation by name, stating, “Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are.”
Amid a six-month-long war resulting in numerous casualties and involving countries across the Gulf, Iran’s strategic control over shipping in the vital Strait of Hormuz has caused disruptions in global markets. Despite two ceasefire agreements between the U.S. and Iran in April and June aimed at restoring normal shipping through Hormuz, the conflict persists. The U.S. and Israel have engaged in military operations, but Trump’s social media pronouncements are not always fully realized.
Recent conflicting reports emerged regarding U.S.-Iran talks. The United Arab Emirates suspended various activities with Iran following allegations of missile launches from Iran, which Iran denied. China, a significant buyer of Iran’s oil, poses economic risks for the U.S. due to its status as a major exporter of essential rare-earth minerals. Iran expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with the U.S. without compromising its stance against pressure and sanctions. While Trump denied ongoing talks with Iran, Jared Kushner, his son-in-law and special envoy, suggested that discussions with Iran were ongoing and more vigorous than ever.
