Shantanu Datta, a recent immigrant to Saskatoon with his family, shared a heartwarming experience involving his 11-year-old daughter. Despite being new to Canada, his daughter wrote a letter to Santa Claus, expressing her desire for snow in their new home. The young girl’s wish for a snowy Christmas stemmed from her excitement about experiencing a genuine winter season, unlike the artificial snowflakes common in India.
The family’s anticipation for a white Christmas was further fueled by Hollywood portrayals of snowy holidays, with scenes of people enjoying hot chocolate by a fireplace and engaging in winter activities. However, the reality in Saskatoon painted a different picture, as the weather forecast hinted at a brown Christmas with little to no snow in sight.
As the global community gathered at the COP28 conference to address climate change, Shantanu reflected on the potential impact of climate issues on future holiday seasons. With the possibility of more brown Christmases looming, he pondered the urgency of addressing climate change more effectively.
Despite the festive decorations and preparations around them, Shantanu’s daughter couldn’t shake off the disappointment of a potentially snowless Christmas in Saskatoon. As the community braced for a different holiday experience, the family remained hopeful for a last-minute snowfall to fulfill their Christmas wishes.
