In her childhood in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV series based in Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she eagerly watched “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, particularly admiring actress Mag Ruffman as Aunt Olivia in the 1990s production.
Upon discovering that Ruffman would be participating in a fan convention on P.E.I. dedicated to the show, Czajka didn’t hesitate to secure a ticket. Describing Ruffman as her childhood equivalent of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at being in attendance at the convention, thanks to her husband’s support.
Enthusiasts of “Road to Avonlea” journeyed from various corners of the world to the Island for the fully-booked event. This acclaimed Canadian series, broadcasted in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996. The storyline revolved around young Sarah Stanley (portrayed by future Oscar winner Sarah Polley), who is sent to reside with her deceased mother’s relatives at the dawn of the 20th century, inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels.
The convention spanned three days, featuring oyster and wine tastings, as well as panel discussions with the show’s actors and crew. Attendees also embarked on tours around the Island to visit filming locations, Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the Cavendish house that influenced her renowned work, “Anne of Green Gables.”
Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, the event organizer, shared his view that the show’s enduring appeal lies in its representation of values like kindness and camaraderie, offering an escape for viewers. He expressed hope that the series would continue to attract new audiences over time, reflecting on the ongoing legacy of the show.
Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, highlighted the emotional connection with fans as a poignant experience for the cast and crew present. She admitted to occasionally pondering the whereabouts of her character, Olivia, from “Road to Avonlea,” emphasizing the enduring impact of the role on her.
Czajka, now reliving the series with her three children, stressed the rarity of finding a show that resonates across generations, emphasizing the joy of sharing the experience with her kids. She cherished the opportunity to introduce her children to a program that had left a lasting impression on her since her early days watching it with her grandmother.
