A contestant on the BBC quiz show “Only Connect” casually mentioned entering an international whistling contest, sparking Ben Shannon’s curiosity. After signing up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list with his daughter Sumire, they unexpectedly found themselves preparing for the prestigious competition in Los Angeles.
Whistling, a skill passed down from Shannon to Sumire, became a serious endeavor as they progressed through auditions and coaching sessions with Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva. Despite initially treating the contest lightly, Shannon and Sumire realized the need for dedicated practice to compete on a global stage.
Their journey led them to Hollywood for the 2023 Masters of Musical Whistling competition, where they encountered talented whistlers from around the world. Amidst the surreal atmosphere, Shannon and Sumire showcased their skills, with Sumire winning silver in the kids’ category and Shannon clinching gold in the level one adults’ category.
Reflecting on the experience, Shannon acknowledged shedding his ironic facade and embracing genuine passion for whistling. The competition’s success taught him the importance of wholeheartedly pursuing interests, even if it means being vulnerable.
