Renowned Winterwatch personality, Chris Packham, recently reflected on a poignant family realization. The 64-year-old disclosed that he and his sister, renowned fashion designer Jenny Packham, grew up striving to meet their parents’ expectations.
Chris revealed that his parents, Rita and Colin, placed a significant emphasis on his education, causing Jenny to rebel against their expectations. Despite their efforts, both siblings felt like they were not reaching their full potential, which motivated them to work even harder to excel.
As a teenager, Chris eventually stopped seeking his parents’ approval. Recalling a moment on the Homing podcast, he mentioned how his mother’s response to his photography contest win was underwhelming, reinforcing his belief that his achievements were never truly acknowledged.
Although Chris found his parents’ approach harsh, he acknowledged that it fueled his and Jenny’s ambition to succeed in their respective careers. Growing up in a working-class background, they learned the value of hard work and perseverance, traits that propelled them to their current professional heights.
Chris attributed his passion for the outdoors to his father Colin, reminiscing about their weekend expeditions in search of wildlife and historical artifacts. Following his university graduation, he embarked on a career in cinematography, eventually landing presenting roles on popular TV shows like The Really Wild Show.
Since 2009, Chris has been a familiar face on BBC’s nature programs, including Springwatch and its seasonal editions. His upcoming appearance on Winterwatch promises an exploration of winter’s marvels, showcasing the beauty of woodlands and migratory bird species.
Don’t miss Chris Packham’s return to your screens tonight at 7 pm on BBC Two for an enlightening Winterwatch episode live from the enchanting Mount Stewart estate on Strangford Lough’s eastern shore.
