The Yellowknives Dene First Nation and the Tłı̨chǫ government have jointly agreed on the designated site for the Arctic Economic and Security Corridor. This 400-kilometre all-season road will link the Grays Bay Road and Port in Nunavut with the N.W.T. highway system, forming part of the nation-building projects aimed at bolstering military presence and mineral exploration in Northern Canada. Additionally, the corridor offers the potential for connecting Wekweètì and Gamètì with spur roads.
Led by the Yellowknives Dene First Nation and the Tłı̨chǫ government, in collaboration with territorial and federal authorities, the project marks a significant milestone in demonstrating Indigenous nations’ capability to spearhead and design major initiatives.
The proposed corridor spans approximately 30 kilometers wide, traversing the Slave Geological Province. Notably, leaders underscored that the corridor is a preliminary step in the development process, emphasizing that it is not a finalized road.
Incorporating considerations for mineral exploration and the area’s significance as caribou habitat and migration pathways, both nations have carefully planned the corridor to mitigate impacts on the caribou population. The agreement resulted from over a year of collaborative effort, drawing on community-led research, traditional knowledge, and Western scientific expertise.
Premier R.J. Simpson expressed the Northwest Territories government’s support for the consensus reached by the two nations, highlighting the importance of Indigenous-led development and government-to-government partnerships in driving progress and fostering opportunities. Upon completion, the corridor will represent Canada’s initial land-based connection to Nunavut’s Arctic coast.
Looking ahead, the Tłı̨chǫ government and Yellowknives Dene First Nation will engage their members, neighboring Indigenous groups, and community stakeholders to gather feedback on the proposed route, underscoring the significance of community input in shaping the project’s future direction.
