Serena and Venus Williams have joined forces once again for the upcoming U.S. Open tournament. Securing a wild card entry on Wednesday, the sisters are set to compete in the doubles event, a title they have previously clinched twice.
After a hiatus of four years, Serena Williams made her return to the tennis scene this summer. Initially scheduled to play at Wimbledon alongside her sister, Serena had to pull out due to a knee injury following a defeat in the singles match. Their recent appearance at the Cincinnati Open saw them exiting in the opening round.
With a successful track record at the U.S. Open, the Williams sisters have claimed the doubles title in 1999 and 2009, boasting a commendable 27-7 record in their nine appearances. In their most recent outing in 2022, they were eliminated in the early stages, marking what was anticipated to be Serena’s final match at Flushing Meadows.
While Serena, aged 44, partnered with Carlos Alcaraz for mixed doubles, securing a victory before bowing out in the quarterfinals, Venus, 46, is gearing up for the women’s singles competition. The dynamic duo has amassed an impressive tally of 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, complemented by Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. Their prowess also earned them the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for eight weeks.
Opting out of the singles category at the U.S. Open, Serena, a six-time Grand Slam singles champion at the tournament, decided to participate in both doubles events. The sisters’ first U.S. Open doubles triumph coincided with Serena’s maiden singles victory at the same event, paving the way for a decade of unparalleled teamwork.
Their dominance peaked in 2009 with triumphs at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, followed by a successful defense of their U.S. Open title. The following year, they clinched the Australian Open once more and added the French Open trophy to their collection, completing a sweep of all four major titles at the time.
The commencement of the women’s doubles tournament is scheduled for September 3rd.
