Tragedy struck a First Nation community in eastern Manitoba as two young brothers aged one and two drowned in the Island Lake region, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The incident was reported to the police on Wednesday when the toddlers were brought to the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station. Family members found the boys in a nearby lake and promptly took them to the nursing station, where they were pronounced dead.
Authorities believe the toddlers wandered away from their home and entered the lake without any foul play involved. The community, led by Anisininew Okimawin Grand Chief Alex McDougall, has come together to support the grieving family and mourn the loss of the two children.
McDougall mentioned that preventative measures, such as building a fence to restrict access to the water, had been taken by the family. The community is in a state of shock and devastation, rallying to provide resources and assistance to the affected family. Garden Hill, located approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg, has been deeply affected by the tragedy.
The incident adds to the unfortunate statistics of drowning deaths in Manitoba, with at least five reported cases in 2026 according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito expressed the difficulty of such situations and assured that the RCMP would extend support to the family during this challenging time.
As the community copes with the loss, Hipolito empathized with the family and urged for space and understanding as they navigate through their grief and healing process.
