A tragic incident occurred during the North West 200 qualifying in Northern Ireland resulting in the death of a rider. Racing was halted after the crash, and it was later confirmed by event organizers that the unnamed rider had passed away.
The fatal accident took place at Station corner on the NW200 course during the morning’s Superbike qualifying session. Despite immediate medical attention, the rider could not survive the injuries sustained. The family has given consent for the event to proceed but has requested to withhold the rider’s identity for now.
The Coleraine and District Motor Club, which oversees the races, expressed heartfelt condolences to the family and team of the deceased rider. Road Racing Ireland also extended sympathies to the rider’s loved ones, friends, team, and all those affected by the tragic incident.
The North West 200, covering a 8.97-mile route on closed public roads encircling the ‘Triangle’ circuit between Portrush, Portstewart, and Coleraine, is Northern Ireland’s prominent outdoor sporting gathering, drawing approximately 100,000 attendees.
This fatality marks the first death at the event since the loss of Malachi Mitchell-Thomas in a Supertwins race in 2016. In response to the incident, organizers have adjusted the schedule for the evening, with roads reopening and four qualifying sessions replacing the initially planned races from 5.45pm onwards.
