A recent inquest revealed that a family was unaware that the bail restrictions imposed on their 15-year-old son had expired two months before he was discovered deceased at his residence.
The young football talent, Tyrique Jemaa, affiliated with Wythenshawe Amateurs, had been apprehended on June 30, 2023, and subsequently granted bail under specific conditions. Tragically, he was found lifeless at home on December 20 following an incident where he was found in possession of a mobile phone at school earlier that same day.
Although the bail terms prohibited him from using electronic devices, including mobile phones, the investigation at Manchester Coroner’s Court disclosed that his bail had actually lapsed on October 1 after three months. Shockingly, neither Tyrique nor his family had been notified about this development, with Coroner Zac Golumbeck citing “administrative oversights” and “administrative errors.”
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) informed Tuckers solicitors, who were representing Tyrique post-arrest, about the lapsed bail on November 15, over a month after the expiration date. However, the family remained uninformed, causing confusion as they believed Tyrique was still bound by the bail conditions even though he was not. The inquest highlighted that he had been “released under investigation,” a status distinct from being on bail, as reported by Manchester Evening News.
During the inquest, it was revealed that Tyrique and his family visited a police station on October 1, only to be instructed to return in the new year, indicating he was no longer under bail conditions.
Furthermore, Tyrique’s school, Dixons Brooklands Academy in Wythenshawe, was aware of the bail terms but had not been informed of their expiration.
On the day of his demise, Tyrique was found in possession of a phone at the school cafeteria, claiming it belonged to his sibling and that he had brought it to school to return it.
Tyrique’s family shared their insights in court, depicting him as an active, intelligent child with a penchant for physical activities and football. They described him as a talented artist, a prankster at home, and someone who embraced challenges. The family emphasized the irreplaceable void left by Tyrique’s passing.
The circumstances of Tyrique’s arrest were not disclosed, and it was emphasized that at the time of his demise, he had not faced any formal charges. The legal proceedings are ongoing.
