As Good Friday approaches, many are on the hunt for the perfect homemade “chippy tea.” To help you avoid a disappointing outcome, we conducted a taste test of various supermarket battered cod options to find out which one truly captures the essence of the seaside original.
Among the selections from Asda, Aldi, Tesco, and Sainsbury’s, one standout emerged as the top choice for recreating the takeaway experience without breaking the bank.
Starting with Sainsbury’s Battered MSC Cod Fillets (£4.50 for two), the packaging was appealing, and the fillets cooked quickly, turning out moist and flaky. The batter crisped up nicely, delivering a chip shop-like crunch. The fish itself was fresh and flavorful, making it a satisfying choice.
Rating: 4/5
Next up, Tesco’s Battered Cod Fillets (£3.95 for two) impressed with generous fillet sizes packed with white flaky fish that had a robust taste. The batter was light and crispy, reminiscent of a classic fish and chip shop experience without being overly greasy, making it the preferred option.
Rating: 5/5
Asda’s Battered Cod Fillets (£4.37 for four) offered a budget-friendly option with a golden appearance post-cooking. While the fish was flaky and consistent, it lacked the same level of flavor as the Tesco fillets but still provided good value for the price.
Rating: 3/5
Aldi’s Battered Cod (£3.39 for four) stood out as the most economical choice, although the quality fell slightly short compared to others. The batter was a bit soggy, but the fish was fresh and tasty, albeit smaller in size.
Rating: 2/5
