“Study Explores Health Impact of Airborne Algae Toxins”

Living near Lake Erie often means being cautious about blue-green algae blooms. Contact with these blooms can lead to skin irritation, throat discomfort, and eye redness. Researchers are now exploring the health impact of airborne algae particles on individuals in the region.

Professor David Kennedy from the University of Toledo is heading the study, focusing on how airborne algae toxins affect human health. The ongoing analysis, part of the Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research Study (GLAMR), aims to understand the potential risks posed by these toxins, particularly for individuals spending time around harmful algal blooms.

The study, involving participants from both the U.S. and Canada, has already collected samples from around 200 individuals. The researchers are keen on identifying individuals more susceptible to these toxins and their associated health effects.

Airborne algae toxins can travel long distances and linger in the air for an extended period. The study’s organizers stress the importance of understanding the long-term health implications of inhaling these toxins, as they can potentially lead to respiratory issues similar to asthma.

While the long-term effects of airborne algae exposure are still being studied, experts emphasize that inhaling toxins can have a more severe impact on lung health compared to ingesting them. The study aims to shed light on how airborne algae toxins spread and persist in the air, especially around Lake Erie and neighboring communities.

With the hope of offering communities better guidance on air quality, researchers aim to provide insights that may prompt proactive measures, such as using air purifiers on days when airborne algae levels are high.
