“Norway Considers Temp Ban on Smart Glasses for Privacy”

Norway is considering imposing a temporary ban on the use of smart glasses in certain public spaces to address concerns about privacy violations. The government aims to regulate the use of AI glasses, which have the capability to capture photos, record conversations, and stream video without the knowledge of those being recorded.

The proposed ban would target locations where privacy is deemed critical, such as healthcare facilities, fitness centers with changing rooms, and areas frequented by children like schools, kindergartens, and playgrounds. It could also encompass public venues like concerts, sports events, parks, beaches, museums, and shopping centers.

The government clarified that the ban would be temporary to allow for deliberation on which devices would be affected and whether permanent regulations are necessary. Exceptions may be made for vulnerable groups to enable socially beneficial uses of smart glasses in specific circumstances.

Privacy advocates have praised Norway’s initiative as a safeguard against intrusive data collection by tech companies. Despite efforts by some companies, such as Meta, to promote responsible usage of AI glasses by respecting individuals’ preferences and incorporating privacy features, concerns persist regarding potential misuse and infringement on privacy rights.

In response to the growing backlash against AI glasses, businesses like the Netherlands-based eyewear retailer Hans Anders have halted sales of certain smart glasses models. Similarly, organizations like the UK Cinema Association have implemented policies to restrict the use of camera-enabled smart glasses in cinemas to address privacy and piracy concerns.

The move by Norway reflects a global trend of governments and businesses grappling with the ethical and privacy implications of emerging technologies, signaling a shift towards more stringent regulations to protect individuals’ privacy in public spaces.
