Despite the spectacle witnessed on Monday, the Met Office anticipates that the aurora will be best viewed in the northern regions of the UK between 6pm and 11.59pm on Tuesday. Cloudy conditions may limit visibility in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
For the aurora to be visible further south, the solar storm intensity would need to reach a Kp level of 8 or 9, according to the forecasters. However, the current forecast indicates a lower activity level of around Kp7 for tonight, suggesting that the display will remain confined to the north.
The Met Office explains that extreme auroral activity typically requires a Kp level of 8 or 9 and is considered rare, as the natural aurora belt is typically located further north. During moderate to strong geomagnetic storms, the Aurora borealis may extend southwards, with faint visibility in the UK due to their high altitude.
