London Marathon Mulls Two-Day Format for 2027

London Marathon organizers are considering expanding the event to span two days in 2027 to accommodate a larger number of participants. The iconic marathon, a fixture in the capital since 1981, may undergo this change to cope with the escalating numbers of runners.

Traditionally held on a single day, the marathon may transition to a weekend format due to the swelling interest from participants. Discussions are underway with stakeholders and partners to potentially host the 2027 TCS London Marathon over a two-day period.

In a statement, a London Marathon representative highlighted the event’s global popularity and the ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility for more individuals while bringing positive impacts to London. Although no official approval has been granted yet, the immediate focus remains on delivering an exceptional 2026 TCS London Marathon experience on April 26.

Chief executive Hugh Brasher emphasized the continuous exploration of innovative ways to involve more people in the renowned marathon and emphasize the positive contributions to London. The upcoming 2026 event aims to amplify the original spirit of the marathon, which sought to inspire joy and accomplishment in a challenging world.

The Mayor of London’s office expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with London Marathon partners to evaluate the feasibility of extending the event to two days next year. The heightened interest in this year’s marathon is evident as over 1.1 million applicants sought to participate, showing a significant increase from previous years.

The event’s success is further underscored by the record-breaking £87.3 million raised and the Guinness World Record achieved last year for the highest number of marathon finishers. The London Marathon continues to be a beacon of community support and achievement on a global scale, resonating deeply with participants and onlookers alike.
