Argentina’s legendary footballer Lionel Messi has officially retired from international soccer after a remarkable 21-year career representing his country. The decision comes after Messi secured a historic World Cup victory in 2022, solidifying his position among the greatest players in the sport’s history. Making the announcement on his Instagram account, the 39-year-old expressed the deep emotions behind his choice.
While bidding farewell to international duty, Messi will continue to showcase his talents at club level with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. He leaves behind a legacy of participating in a record-equalling six World Cups, including a triumphant campaign in Qatar four years ago. Despite falling short in the recent World Cup final against Spain, Messi’s contributions to Argentine football have firmly established him alongside icons like Diego Maradona and Pele.
Acknowledging the support from fans and reflecting on his dedication to the national team, Messi emphasized his unwavering commitment to representing Argentina with pride and joy on the field. With 207 appearances for his country, he leaves as Argentina’s all-time leading goal scorer with 125 goals, including 21 in World Cup competitions. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more goals in men’s internationals, with 146 goals to his name.
Messi’s international journey was marked by both triumphs and setbacks, including a brief retirement in 2016 following a series of major final defeats. However, his resilience and talent ultimately led to significant victories, including the World Cup triumph in 2018 and Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024. As he embarks on the next chapter of his career, Messi expressed gratitude for the support and love received throughout his two-decade tenure with the national team.
The retirement announcement has evoked a wave of emotional tributes from various quarters, with Argentine President Javier Milei and FIFA President Gianni Infantino commending Messi for his extraordinary career and lasting impact on the sport. Teammates and football personalities also expressed their admiration and appreciation for Messi’s leadership, resilience, and unwavering dedication to Argentine football.
