“Liberals Face High-Stakes Byelection Battles”

Voters are set to participate in the election process on Monday to determine the outcomes of three federal byelections taking place in North Vancouver-Capilano, Beaches-East York, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec, respectively.

With the Liberals currently holding 170 seats in the House of Commons due to several vacancies, they are in competition with the combined opposition parties, who possess a total of 166 seats. Securing two victories in the byelections will ensure the Liberals maintain control of the legislative agenda once all vacant seats are filled.

Chicoutimi-Le Fjord is anticipated to host the most closely contested race, following the resignation of former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who had represented the riding since 2018 before being appointed to the Senate. The seat is being contested by the Liberals and Bloc Québécois, with polls indicating a tight race between the two parties. Daniel Gobeil is the Liberal candidate, while Caroline Dubé is running for the Bloc.

In North Vancouver-Capilano, candidates are vying to succeed former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who won the riding by a margin of about 16,500 votes in the 2025 federal election. Wilkinson vacated the seat in July after being appointed as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The candidates for this riding include Braeden Caley for the Liberals, Stephen Curran for the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale for the NDP, and Shelley Luce for the Green Party.

Meanwhile, in Beaches-East York, candidates are seeking to fill the vacancy left by former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who secured a significant victory in the 2025 federal election by approximately 26,000 votes. The candidates in this riding are Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberals, Jim Syrbos for the Conservatives, Shannon Devine for the NDP, and Bruce Livesey for the Green Party.

CBC News will be providing special coverage of the byelections, with chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton and host of Power & Politics, David Cochrane. The coverage will commence at 9:30 p.m. ET and will be available for streaming on CBC News platforms.

Should the Liberals fail to secure victories in all three byelections, they will have future opportunities to attain the two wins required for a majority. Additionally, Prime Minister Carney has yet to announce three byelections in Quebec and one in Ontario. Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall is expected to officially resign from her seat in the Saskatchewan riding of Yorkton-Melville on Monday, while Conservative MP Larry Brock has announced plans to step down from his seat in the Ontario riding of Brantford-Brant South-Six Nations next month.
