Longtime voice of Calgary Flames radio broadcasts for over three decades, Peter Maher, has passed away at the age of 79. Maher’s death was confirmed on Thursday. He served as the play-by-play commentator for the team’s radio broadcasts starting in 1980, covering 33 consecutive seasons. Throughout his illustrious career, which included the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their appearance in the finals in 2004, Maher was renowned for his enthusiasm and signature catchphrases such as “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” His tenure came to an end after the 2013-14 NHL season.
The Calgary Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s loved ones and fans, acknowledging that his voice had become synonymous with the experience of being a Flames supporter. Born and raised in Campbellton, N.B., Maher initially called Toronto Maple Leafs games for the CKO Radio Network before relocating to Calgary when the Flames moved from Atlanta in 1980.
Rob Kerr, who shared the press box with Maher at the Saddledome, lamented the loss of a great storyteller of Flames history. Kerr praised Maher’s dedication to his craft, emphasizing his commitment to delivering authentic and journalistic-based commentary to fans. Maher’s meticulous approach was evident during memorable moments like the Flames’ 2004 playoff run when he passionately exclaimed “Yeah, baby!” following a pivotal goal.
In addition to his work with the Flames, Maher also covered six NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the Canadian men’s hockey team at the 2010 Winter Olympics, including Sidney Crosby’s iconic “Golden Goal.” Recognized for his exceptional contributions to NHL broadcasting, Maher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award.
Following his retirement, Maher was honored with the naming of the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome in his memory. He also inspired an annual award given by local Calgary media to the Flames player who exemplifies sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
