“Labour MPs Push for WASPI Payout Reversal”

Keir Starmer is encountering a new challenge as Labour members of parliament are adding their voices to the chorus demanding a reversal of the decision on WASPI payouts.

A group of fifteen backbenchers, along with a hundred MPs from various parties including the Liberal Democrats, Conservatives, Reform, SNP, independents, and DUP, have united in urging a reconsideration of the denial of compensation to millions of women born in the 1950s. The MPs emphasized the importance of rectifying the situation in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister.

The Government is currently reassessing its stance following the emergence of new evidence last year. The letter highlighted the need for a fair resolution for the 1950s-born women, drawing parallels to recent reconsiderations on other financial matters.

Pressure is mounting on the Government to overturn its decision withholding compensation ranging from £1,000 to £2,950 for 3.6 million women affected by the issue. Legal action by WASPI had been imminent pending the outcome of the latest review.

Mistakes made by the Department for Work and Pensions led to a lack of proper communication regarding the increase in the state pension age for women, leaving many in financial distress after being caught unprepared.

These women were particularly impacted by the successive increases in the state pension age from 60 to 65 and then to 66.

Angela Madden, the chair of the WASPI campaign, emphasized the urgency of compensating the affected women and highlighted the overwhelming support from the public and across Parliament.

The coming weeks are crucial for Labour ministers to demonstrate their responsiveness to the calls from both their backbenchers and fellow MPs, as pressure continues to mount for a resolution to the longstanding issue.
