Renowned singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, after more than 60 years since departing Canada, has officially obtained U.S. citizenship to exercise her voting rights. Mitchell, 82, disclosed this milestone through a post on Instagram and X, showcasing a photo and video from her naturalization ceremony where she appeared cheerful, sporting a red beret and sunglasses while holding an American flag. She affirmed her longstanding journey in a concise caption.
Mitchell clarified her motivation for acquiring citizenship, emphasizing her desire to vote without relinquishing her Canadian nationality, declaring herself a proud “Canerican” akin to Neil Young. Dual citizenship is permitted by both Canada and the U.S., enabling Mitchell to uphold her Canadian identity alongside her new American status.
Born as Roberta Joan Anderson in 1943 in Fort Macleod, Alta., Mitchell ventured to the U.S. during the 1960s, residing in various states before settling in California, where she played a pivotal role in the Laurel Canyon music scene. Despite currently living in Santa Barbara, Calif., she also maintains a residence in British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. Mitchell is celebrated for songs like “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock,” with her album “Blue” from 1971 standing as a significant hallmark in her career.
Transitioning from a folk singer in Toronto to an esteemed songwriter, Mitchell has amassed a legacy marked by 19 studio albums, 11 Grammy Awards, five Juno Awards, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her outspoken political viewpoints have garnered attention, notably her critique of former U.S. President Donald Trump during a 2024 performance.
The announcement of Mitchell’s U.S. citizenship elicited mixed reactions on social media, with some lauding the decision while others questioned its timing amidst strained U.S.-Canada relations and Mitchell’s past criticisms of Trump. Following a recovery from a 2015 brain aneurysm, Mitchell reemerged in 2022, receiving a lifetime achievement award at the Juno Awards. A biopic recounting her life, helmed by director Cameron Crowe and featuring Meryl Streep, is reportedly in the works, hinting at a cinematic portrayal of Mitchell’s storied journey.
