The discovery of the final Israeli hostage’s remains in Gaza has been confirmed. Ran Gvili’s body was recovered in the northern Gaza Strip’s “Yellow Line” region, as announced by the Israeli Defences Forces (IDF). The National Institute of Forensic Medicine, in collaboration with the Israeli police and military rabbinate, positively identified the remains.
Ran Gvili, a former sergeant first class in the Israeli police special forces, was tragically killed during the October 7 Hamas attacks at Alumim kibbutz before being taken to Gaza.
In an official statement, the IDF expressed condolences to the family and highlighted that Ran Gvili, a Yamam commando fighter aged 24 at the time of his death, fell in battle on October 7, 2023, with his body later transported to Gaza. The IDF pledged continued support to the families of hostages and efforts to enhance Israel’s security.
Hamas responded by affirming its adherence to the terms of the Gaza ceasefire, citing the return of Mr. Gvili’s body as a demonstration of its commitment. Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem emphasized the group’s dedication to the ceasefire agreement and prisoner exchange.
Recent data from Gaza’s Health Ministry revealed that over 71,650 Palestinians have died at the hands of Israeli forces since October 7, 2023, with more than 480 fatalities occurring post-ceasefire implementation. Additionally, Hamas claimed the lives of over 1,100 individuals in Israel on the same day, with 251 hostages taken to Gaza. Prior to the recovery of Ran Gvili’s remains, 20 living hostages and 27 deceased individuals had been repatriated to Israel since the ceasefire, with Israel reciprocating by transferring hundreds of Palestinian bodies to Gaza.
Meanwhile, the IDF’s search operation for Gvili resulted in the fatal shooting of a Palestinian man in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood, and another Palestinian man was reported dead in the Bureij refugee camp. The circumstances surrounding the latter’s death remain unclear.
