The latest phase of scratchings for the Grand National has seen ten horses removed from the running, leaving a total of 34 contenders set to compete at Aintree. Horse racing enthusiasts are gearing up for the prestigious £1million National event scheduled less than a month away, featuring top staying chasers navigating 30 fences over a challenging four-mile, two-and-a-half furlong course.
Since 2024, the field size for the National has been capped at 34 horses, down from 40, providing insight into the potential lineup for the race on April 11. Recent scratchings have included notable entries such as Dan Skelton’s Grey Dawning, Olly Murphy’s Resplendent Grey, and Gentlemansgame trained by Mouse Morris.
Additional withdrawals include horses from Gordon Elliott’s stable, such as Western Fold, Croke Park, Better Days Ahead, and Search For Glory. Ben Pauling’s Handstands and Pic Roc, along with Anthony Honeyball’s Leave of Absence, have also been taken out of contention.
Among the remaining field of 34 horses, the duo from Willie Mullins, I Am Maximus (the 2024 winner) and Grangeclare West (winner of the Bobbyjo Chase), stand out as strong contenders. However, potential changes are expected as some horses may opt to compete in the Irish National on April 6, with Oscars Brother currently leading the market.
One of the prominent British hopefuls is Haiti Couleurs, the winner of Welsh and Irish Nationals. Trained by Rebecca Curtis, Haiti Couleurs is being primed for Aintree after competing in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham. Curtis expressed enthusiasm about running him in the National, highlighting his strength in National-type races.
With preparations ongoing, Curtis emphasized the importance of Haiti Couleurs’ fitness and well-being in the lead-up to the race, expressing confidence in his ability to perform well at Aintree. The plan is reminiscent of his previous race schedule, and Curtis remains optimistic about his chances given his past successes in similar events.
