“Emmy Awards to Stream Exclusively on Prime Video from 2027”

The Emmy Awards will be showcased on Prime Video beginning in 2027 under a newly inked six-year pact between Amazon and the Television Academy, marking the conclusion of a seven-decade era where broadcast networks broadcasted the event.

The recent agreement signifies a transition to streaming platforms that have been dominating the acclaimed categories at the Emmys. Since 1955, the awards show has been broadcasted annually on one of the four major networks. However, the upcoming September awards show will mark a significant shift as it settles into a single, long-term home.

The decision to move the Emmys to Prime Video was made with the stipulation that the event will remain freely accessible, with no requirement for a Prime Video subscription. This move mirrors the Oscars’ recent deal to stream exclusively on YouTube starting in 2029, while the Emmy transition to Prime Video is effective immediately.

In light of declining viewership across various awards shows, including the Emmys, the Academy and Amazon are hopeful that Prime Video’s extensive platform will help reverse this trend. By offering a broad range of Emmy-nominated content and promoting nominees throughout the year, they aim to attract a younger audience and increase viewership over time.

While acknowledging the significance of streaming, Chairman of the Television Academy, Cris Abrego, emphasized that the quality of the content remains paramount over the delivery method. The move to Prime Video aligns with the platform’s focus on prioritizing live events, further enhancing their hybrid live-on-demand service.

The agreement secures the Emmy Awards on Prime Video until 2027, with potential flexibility to explore changing the event date in the future. This shift signifies a new chapter for the Emmys, with both Amazon and the Television Academy committed to evolving together in the coming years.
