This move comes after the recent dismissal of Ukraine’s defense minister, who urged national elections despite the ongoing conflict with Russia.
The investigation targets a criminal organization allegedly led by a current and former lawmaker, with involvement from high-ranking officials in the president’s office and other individuals. Details of the operation are expected to be revealed later, according to a joint statement from Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.
President Zelenskyy has not publicly commented on the investigation but has taken action by removing Iryna Mudra from her position as deputy head of the president’s office through a decree. This development poses a challenge to Zelenskyy’s political strength amid previous instances of turmoil within his administration.
The recent appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as the new defense minister by Ukraine’s parliament, with overwhelming support from lawmakers, follows the ousting of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov in July. Fedorov, in a video address, advocated for holding elections in Ukraine to address governance issues and combat corruption, signaling a direct challenge to Zelenskyy’s stance on the current martial law situation due to the conflict.
