“Condom Shortage Hits Milano Cortina Winter Olympics Village”

The Winter Olympics village in Milano Cortina has reportedly exhausted its condom supply despite distributing 10,000 free condoms to athletes. The living quarters for Olympians are well-known for their lively atmosphere, with numerous stories of amorous encounters surfacing over time.

Efforts by officials to address potential issues include providing free contraceptives. However, while 200,000 condoms were distributed at the Paris Summer Games in 2024 for around 10,500 athletes, only a mere 10,000 were given out in Milano Cortina, where just under 3,000 participants are currently based.

An anonymous athlete disclosed to Italian newspaper La Stampa that the condoms ran out within three days, with uncertain promises of restocking. Additionally, so-called ‘anti-sex’ beds have been introduced as a measure to discourage off-camera activities, but the cardboard design has not proven effective.

This situation is not unprecedented, as organizers at the Sydney 2000 Games had to order an additional 20,000 condoms after exhausting their initial 70,000 supply. An outbreak of a sexually transmitted infection would pose a significant risk to the Games, with a focus on prioritizing health and preventive measures.

A former Olympic gold medalist highlighted the adult nature of the village environment, emphasizing that sexual activity is a recognized aspect of the Olympic experience. The International Olympic Committee’s provision of ample condoms reflects an acknowledgment of this reality.
