Canada Basketball Roster Revealed for 2027 World Cup Qualifiers

Canada’s men’s basketball team will be missing key players for the upcoming 2027 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. General manager Rowan Barrett revealed the roster for the Americas qualifiers, featuring standout players like Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luguentz Dort from the Atlanta Hawks.

The team is set to face Panama in Panama City before hosting Argentina in Quebec City. Notably, NBA stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks will not be part of the squad for various reasons, including injuries and other commitments.

Barrett emphasized the importance of assembling a well-rounded team with both inside and outside players for these crucial qualifiers. The team, currently ranked fifth globally, aims to secure a spot in the World Cup in Qatar by maintaining their undefeated record in Group F.

Veteran forward Kelly Olynyk brings experience to the team, while Alexander-Walker, coming off a stellar season, was named the NBA’s most improved player. The team also includes players like RJ Barrett and Bennedict Mathurin as ambassadors, although they will not be playing in the upcoming matches.

Barrett highlighted the challenges of managing a roster amid various player circumstances, noting the need for a deep pool of committed athletes. Despite missing some top NBA talents, the team remains focused on executing their game plan and building upon their success.

The upcoming qualifiers will test the team’s resilience and depth as they strive to secure their place in the prestigious World Cup tournament.
