After nearly five decades of involvement with the Toronto Blue Jays as a player, manager, and broadcaster, John Albert Martinez, known as Buck, was officially honored by being inducted into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence on Saturday.
This recognition was part of the Blue Jays’ ongoing 50th-season festivities, which included the unveiling of the Hall of Excellence to pay tribute to the organization’s most influential figures. The Hall, situated behind right field at Rogers Centre, now features the names of 11 esteemed individuals previously recognized on the Level of Excellence.
The 77-year-old Martinez, a cancer survivor, received this accolade before the Blue Jays’ game against the Seattle Mariners. His popularity soared throughout Canada during his extensive tenure as a team broadcaster, a role he retired from last year.
Reflecting on the occasion, Martinez expressed his astonishment, stating, “Today blew me away. I didn’t have any grasp of the magnitude of today.”

Martinez also shared an encounter where a new acquaintance, Brett Bateman, approached him to offer congratulations, emphasizing Martinez’s significance to the Blue Jays and their fan base.
During a trip to England in July, a group of women recognized Martinez’s voice and circled back to greet him while he was enjoying a drink with a friend. Martinez highlighted the deep appreciation he holds for Canadians.
Describing the impact of the Blue Jays on fans across the country, Martinez remarked, “They’re so proud that they came this far to watch the Blue Jays, and that’s the impact the Blue Jays have had on this entire country.”
Joining a prestigious list of honorees, Martinez now stands alongside notable figures such as Jose Bautista, Paul Beeston, and Roy Halladay in the revered Hall of Excellence.
While the Level of Excellence will continue to be displayed within the ballpark for the rest of the season, plans are underway to relocate it within the stadium next year to ensure that fans can always see the names of the honored individuals.
