“Ontario Man Faces Animal Cruelty Charges for Flamingo Snatching”

An Ontario man faced animal cruelty charges in a Las Vegas court for snatching a flamingo named Peachy from its habitat at a renowned hotel in a drunken and malicious act. Mitchell Fairbarn, a contractor from rural Ontario, was accused of injuring the flamingo on March 3. Fairbarn, who claimed he drank “30 to 40” beers on that day, entered the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino’s flamingo habitat and took the bird as a joke with his friends. The habitat, certified by the National Wildlife Federation, is home to Chilean flamingos and other wildlife.

Video evidence presented in court showed Fairbarn handling the flamingo roughly, causing it physical harm. The flamingo suffered injuries, including missing feathers and blood loss, requiring antibiotics and pain medication for recovery. Despite claiming no malicious intent, Fairbarn was convicted of felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges and faces potential prison time.

Fairbarn’s attorney argued that his client’s actions were a result of intoxication and regretted the incident. The court proceedings revealed that Peachy has since recovered and is in good health. Animal rights advocates expressed satisfaction with the justice served in this case, emphasizing the importance of protecting animals from cruelty. The incident involving Peachy is part of a series of recent animal cruelty cases at Las Vegas casinos, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws.
