“Jazz Legend Oliver Jones to be Honored at Memorial Service”

A memorial ceremony for the late Oliver Jones is set to happen at Union United Church, near the renowned jazz musician’s childhood residence where he kickstarted his illustrious career with his debut performance at age five.

Jones passed away at the age of 91 on July 22. The service is scheduled for Thursday following a public viewing held at city hall the day before.

Union United Church, serving the Black community for 119 years, is situated just a short distance from Jones’s family home in the Little Burgundy neighborhood.

Throughout his extensive musical journey, Jones was honored with various accolades, such as JUNO awards, honorary doctorates, and appointments to the orders of Montreal, Quebec, and Canada.

A fixture in Little Burgundy and the Montreal Jazz Festival, Jones graced the stage numerous times, performing annually from 1981 to 1999.

The upcoming service, running from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET on Thursday, will feature musical tributes, prayers, and speeches commemorating the legendary jazz figure.
