Four years ago, Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a routine, feeling like her life lacked excitement. At the suggestion of her brother, she turned to her passion for K-pop and the globally renowned boy band BTS to create BTS Army Toronto. The fan club, named after the broader BTS fan community known as the “army,” organizes events and meet-ups that unite fans in their shared love for the South Korean group.
Despite facing the loss of her brother shortly after establishing BTS Army Toronto, Vann persevered and expanded the club into a vibrant community. It now boasts hundreds of members, hosts various activities, facilitates giveaways and charity events, and advocates for local Korean businesses. As BTS gears up for their highly anticipated return to Toronto after more than ten years, Vann, along with her son Jordan and a dedicated team of around ten individuals, is thrilled by the club’s growth and impact.
Expressing her gratitude, Vann emphasized the friendships and connections fostered within the community, highlighting the joy of sharing a passion for music and the band. BTS, as part of their Arirang World Tour, is set to perform sold-out shows at Rogers Stadium in Toronto over the weekend, captivating an audience of approximately 100,000 fans across two nights.
The City of Toronto recently honored the occasion by unveiling BTS Boulevard on Yonge Street, adorned with a red design inspired by the tour’s branding. This honorary street name will remain in place until September 23. Additionally, the city designated Saturday and Sunday as BTS Weekend, symbolized by illuminating the Toronto sign in purple, a color associated with BTS and its loyal fanbase.
Renowned for their fervent following, BTS fans, known as the army, possess extensive knowledge of the band’s history, members, and music catalog. Devotion to BTS originates from the band’s profound lyrics that touch on themes such as mental health, self-love, and personal growth, resonating deeply with fans.
Vann praised BTS for their meaningful contributions through music, lauding their dedication to creating art that makes a positive impact on the world. Following a hiatus due to mandatory military service for the group’s members, BTS embarked on a world tour, with Toronto being the sole Canadian stop, featuring a total of 88 shows across 34 cities in 23 countries.
Since their inception in 2013, BTS has risen from underdogs to global sensations, achieving milestones such as topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart with their English song “Dynamite.” The band’s fifth album, “ARIRANG,” debuted at the top of the Billboard 200, marking a significant achievement in group album sales.
Excitement is palpable among Toronto fans awaiting the upcoming concerts, with many eager to witness BTS live and experience the long-awaited return of their favorite band. The city’s embrace of BTS’s visit further underscores the significance of the band’s presence in Toronto, bringing joy to fans and fostering a sense of connection within the community.
As fans gear up for the concerts, BTS Army Toronto plans to engage with fans through various activities, offering a guide to Toronto and hosting pre-concert events for members to gather and share the excitement. Vann looks forward to the unique concert experience and the sense of gratitude and connection it will bring to the community post-event.
