Four individuals, including two teenagers and an infant, were rescued from a fast-spreading house fire with the help of an off-duty RCMP officer. Constable Anton Lorde sprang into action on July 18 after noticing a thick plume of smoke in the air, leading him to Mount Pleasant Street in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Upon arriving at the scene, Lorde encountered a house engulfed in flames, prompting him to clear the street for incoming fire trucks. Initially assuming the house was empty due to the presence of bystanders, he was informed by a neighbor that several people, including children, resided there.
Following the neighbor’s directions, Lorde made his way to the backyard, where he began knocking on windows in an attempt to locate anyone inside the burning structure. Discovering a terrified boy peering back at him through the blinds, Lorde urged him to evacuate.
Subsequently, the father of the children emerged, and together with Lorde, they broke a window, allowing the family members to escape. The father, identified as Peter Magliaro, managed to rescue his children, assisted by Lorde and another relative.
While the details of the rescue remain somewhat hazy for Lorde, he emphasized the collaborative effort involved in saving lives. Magliaro expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by Lorde and credited the joint effort that ensured the family’s safety.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by authorities, with Magliaro suspecting foul play and offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible. Despite losing their home, the family remains resilient, with plans to rebuild in the future.
In a statement, the RCMP in Nova Scotia commended Constable Anton Lorde for his bravery and swift response during the critical incident. As investigations continue, the community awaits further updates on the circumstances surrounding the fire.
