“Double Life Sentence for Saint John Father in Sons’ Murders Sparks Urgency for Preventative Action”

The recent trial of a Saint John resident who was found guilty of fatally stabbing his two sons has deeply impacted many individuals, prompting questions about the circumstances leading to such a tragic event and ways to prevent similar incidents. Roman Kamyshnyy, aged 46, received a double life sentence last week with no possibility of parole for 25 years after being convicted by a jury in June for two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his 10 and 17-year-old sons.

Peter Jaffe, an expert on domestic violence based in London, Ontario, noted that while it may be incomprehensible for most to imagine a parent harming their own child, approximately 30 children in Canada lose their lives at the hands of a parent each year. Jaffe highlighted that filicides, where a parent kills their child, often occur in the context of intimate partner violence, especially when the male partner seeks revenge after a breakup by targeting the children.

A study released earlier this year revealed that New Brunswick had the highest number of domestic violence-related homicides in Atlantic Canada between 2012 and 2022. The province also had the highest annual death rate when adjusted for population size, emphasizing the prevalence of such tragic incidents in the region.

Mary Aspinall, an assistant professor specializing in criminology at St. Thomas University, pointed out that in cases where children are killed, they are not always the primary target but are instead used as a means to inflict further harm on the other parent, usually the mother. Aspinall emphasized the need for better awareness and education to identify warning signs and prevent such tragedies.

In Kamyshnyy’s case, the prosecution argued that the murders were driven by vengeance, with the father using his sons’ lives as a weapon to retaliate against his ex-wife for alleged infidelity. The tragic events unfolded when the boys’ bodies were discovered in their family residence, leading to Kamyshnyy’s subsequent suicide attempt and a note taking full responsibility for the situation.

Experts like Jaffe stress the importance of recognizing and addressing risk factors early on to prevent such incidents, advocating for increased public education and awareness campaigns. Aspinall highlighted the need for a paradigm shift in understanding relationship abuse and updating risk assessment tools to evaluate harm towards children.

Efforts to criminalize coercive control in intimate relationships and improve training for frontline professionals are seen as crucial steps in preventing domestic violence-related tragedies. Ultimately, experts believe that with a concerted commitment to action and proper funding, domestic homicides can be reduced in the future.
