Residents of Fort McKay, Alberta, are facing a significant issue with dust pollution, according to new research published in Atmospheric Pollution Research. The study reveals that the community is experiencing high levels of dust pollution, surpassing regulatory air quality guidelines on numerous occasions.
The research, led by University of Toronto PhD candidate Kristin Iorio and independent researchers in Alberta, highlights that Fort McKay is particularly affected by severe dustfall events caused by large particles of dust. These dustfall episodes, characterized by thick, coarse grit settling over the community, are not adequately captured by standard air monitoring methods.
During a 24-month sampling period, Fort McKay exceeded Alberta Ambient Air Quality Guidelines for dustfall 17 times monthly, with levels exceeding acceptable thresholds nearly 20% of the time. The study emphasizes the need for enhanced monitoring and regulatory measures to address the impact of dust pollution on Fort McKay and other communities near intensive resource development.
The study suggests implementing real-time dustfall monitoring to identify pollution sources and alert residents during high-intensity dust events. Researchers also recommend updating Alberta’s air quality objectives to include PM10 contamination, which consists of larger particles that can pose health risks but are currently unregulated.
Experts like Ke Du from the University of Calgary echo the call for expanded monitoring and updated guidelines to address episodic industrial pollution effectively. The findings underscore the importance of continuous monitoring to mitigate the health implications of dust pollution in Fort McKay and similar communities.
While the Alberta Energy Regulator and Fort McKay First Nation have not commented on the study, Alberta Environment officials stated that the findings will be considered as part of ongoing evaluations of monitoring approaches and air quality objectives. Community-led initiatives for dust monitoring are being supported to address the concerns raised by residents and researchers in Fort McKay regarding air quality issues.
