Recent concerns raised by parents in Labrador west highlighted the need for regulations to enhance the safety of these modes of transportation. Jackie Granter and Kesha Morgan expressed worries about the lack of safe operation practices and low helmet usage among riders, observing instances of risky behavior on the roads.
Both parents voiced their support for the government’s initiative to amend the Highway Traffic Act to regulate e-bikes and e-scooters. Granter suggested implementing a safety course to educate riders on road rules before allowing children to use these vehicles, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement by municipalities and the province.
In line with public engagement efforts, an online survey is available on engagenl.ca for individuals to provide their input on potential safety requirements, such as age restrictions, helmet usage, education, and operational rules for e-scooters and e-bikes. Written submissions can also be sent via email or mail to the Government Services department.
To address safety concerns surrounding e-scooter usage, Pamela Fuselli of Parachute Canada emphasized that these vehicles are not toys and recommended that children under 16 should not operate them. The Canadian Pediatric Society survey highlighted the prevalence of severe injuries resulting from e-scooter crashes, underscoring the need for stringent safety measures.
Julia Kent from the Canadian Automobile Association Atlantic highlighted the regulatory gaps surrounding micro-mobility vehicles, stressing the urgency for updated rules to mitigate risks associated with these motorized devices. Kent emphasized the need for collaboration among manufacturers, legislators, and enforcement agencies to enhance safety standards.
